Promising new HIV drug keeps virus out of cells

Washington, Aug 19 : University of Utah researchers have developed a promising new anti-HIV drug candidate, PIE12-trimer, that prevents the virus from attacking human cells.

Michael S. Kay, associate professor of biochemistry in the University of Utah School of Medicine and senior author of the study, is raising funds to begin animal safety studies, followed by human clinical trials in two to three years.

Washington, Aug 19 : Researchers have come up with an innovative approach to eliminate HIV in host by targeted killing of only the infected cells-a feat, if successful could lead into an anti-HIV therapy that will eradicate the virus.

Current HIV treatments do not eradicate HIV from host cells but rather inhibit virus replication and delay the onset of AIDS.

Chef Anthony Swanson, of Cafe 21 at the Treasury Casino, has created Brisbane’s biggest burger, which has now become a tourist attraction, with 21 ingredients.

The 21 burger includes a 250gm meat pattie and a new super-sized bun to support its heavy load.

Nearly 770m non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke in China: Study

New Delhi, Aug 18 : A recent tobacco usage survey has shown a steep hike in the rate of exposure to secondhand smoke among Chinese people.

The survey done by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that the rate jumped from 53 percent in 2002 to about 73 percent in 2010, reports the China Daily.
