38 killed in Turkey earthquake

More officers jailed in Turkey coup investigation

Istanbul, Feb 25 : A Turkish court Thursday ruled to jail another group of army officers in an ongoing investigation into an alleged coup plot against the government.

Twenty officers - including five admirals and three generals, some of them still serving - have now been jailed as part of the inquiry into the plot, dubbed "Sledgehammer".

Istanbul, Jan 22 : A coordinated police sweep in several Turkish cities Friday resulted in the arrest of 120 suspected Al Qaeda members, the semi-official Anatolian Agency reported.

Coordinated raids by police counterterrorism units took place in the early morning in more than a dozen provinces across Turkey.

Turkish police arrest 20 suspected Al Qaeda militants

Istanbul, Jan 18 : Turkish police Monday arrested 20 suspected Al Qaeda members in a sweep in the city of Adana, the semi-official Anatolian Agency reported.

Some 300 police officers were involved in the operation, which targeted 25 homes in the city on Turkey's Mediterranean coast. Weapons and ammunition were confiscated during the raid, according to the report.

Turkish security forces have arrested dozens of suspected Al Qaeda members in recent years.

Turkish navy comes to aid of Indian ship in Gulf of Aden

Istanbul, Jan 16 : The crew of the Turkish frigate Goekova Saturday captured six Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden after an Indian trading ship came under attack, Turkish media reported Saturday.

The Anadolu news agency citing Turkish military said that after the six men in a boat fired upon the Indian ship Jal, a Turkish military on patrol in the area sent in a helicopter and special forces to ward off the attack and capture the pirates.

Piracy is rampant in the waters near Somalia, which has not had a functioning government since 1991.

Pope John Paul II gunman looks for movie, book deals

Istanbul, Jan 15 - The assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in St Peter's Square may have taken place almost 30 years ago, but the event remains seared in the minds of many around the world.

That, at least, is the hope of the would-be assassin, Mehmet Ali Agca, who is set to be released from Turkish prison Jan 18.

Once free, Agca is apparently hoping to land lucrative book deals and earn big sums for interviews. He has reportedly even written to Dan Brown, author of the best-selling "Da Vinci Code" about his idea for a book titled "The Vatican Code".
